The.Embodiment Project

A Visual Diary through Breast Cancer Treatment

“On September 1st, 2020, my life felt like it was no longer mine. I knew I needed to keep my soul close while my body was being invaded. These images, created over the course of six months of my active cancer treatment, allowed me to express what was happening to me physically and emotionally – in a creative way, and in a visceral way.  This wasn’t a documentary project, rather it was a digital diary of my journey through cancer, love, body dysmorphia, and everything in between the tiny cracks.  This was a raw account of a young woman spiraling through a life-threatening disease while planting roots for the future.  At times irreverent and times hysterical, The.Embodiment pulls back the curtain on the things most breast cancer books don’t tell you.”

The.Embodiment was intended as a cathartic exploration for Sarrah.  For us as the photographers, the project provided a concrete way to support her as friends and colleagues – allowing us to offer what we could, capturing her at her most vulnerable and, yet, her most profoundly superhuman. Restrictions of Covid lockdown prevented us from capturing Sarrah in her day-to-day activities, doctor appointments, and medical treatment. Much of the storytelling, therefore, had to be envisaged through conceptual means and symbolism. By focusing on her inner conflict and outward symptoms, we found a way of celebrating life and her fight to keep it.
